Madrid and Barcelona, Spain
orcid.org/0000-0001-9501-498XFrancisco X. Real trained in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York but, currently, he does not practice. Over the past two decades, his group has been interested in elucidating the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of cell differentiation in the pancreas and their impact on homeostasis and carcinogenesis. In addition, he collaborates closely with epidemiologists and clinicians to translate knowledge on the molecular genetics of pancreatic cancer at the clinical and population levels. His group also works actively in bladder cancer.
Herbert Tilg is Head of Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Endocrinology at Medical University Innsbruck, Austria. He did his research fellowship at Tufts University with Charles Dinarello. His research focus is inflammation and cytokine research in gastrointestinal disorders. He served as member of Governing Board of ECCO, EASL and UEG. He is currently Chairman of the Scientific Committee of UEG.
My research focus lies on the immunobiology of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and SARS COV2 infection as well as of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our group has provided important novel insights into the mechanisms of T cell success and failure, e.g., viral escape and T cell exhaustion in viral hepatitis, SARS COVID19 and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Michael Camilleri, M.D., is interested in understanding why patients develop disorders of gastrointestinal motility and function and how best to diagnose and treat them with approved medications and untested remedies. Dr. Camilleri is also interested in understanding the factors that determine people’s appetites, since he believes this is one of the key factors to the control of obesity.
Matias A. Avila is Professor of Biochemistry, director of the Hepatology Laboratory and co-director of
the Solid Tumors Program at the Center for Applied Medical Research at the University of Navarra,
